People seem unmotivated with a lack of focus and drive for the people served by the organization

You have just started your new position and have been working now for two weeks and have discovered the following challenges: · The board of directors is very involved in the operations of the organization. They regularly drop into the organization and ask questions that are not board related. They seem to have their “fingers” inside the organization at all levels. You have discovered that sometimes your senior managers and staff will go to board members instead of you for approvals, guidance, mentorship, and assistance with problem solving. · The board meetings last for three to four hours and there seems to be very little focus, action, decisions, or purpose to the meetings. · The organization seems to be suffering mission drift and no one seems to understand the core values and vision of the organization. Each site is essentially “doing their own thing.” People seem unmotivated with a lack of focus and drive for the people served by the organization. · We know that change is constant in the world of nonprofit organizations, particularly in their external relations. Citizens, economic trends, and other external forcers can cause nonprofit to fail if they are not reviewing, reassessing, and responding. The organization seems stagnant and not aware of their changing environments. You are concerned that the environment is changing fast and the organization will not be able to catch up. You attended your first community network meeting (a meeting made up of other service providers) and you heard comments like “nobody from your organization ever comes to our meetings” and “we don’t even know what your organization does anymore or who you serve.” Based on your readings in Chapters 1,2,3,4 and 6 you know that executive management refers to the person who has the overall responsibility for the operations of the organization. This position is the most senior paid position and is viewed as the position of controlling the successes and failures of the organization that they have responsibility for and you know you have a lot of work to do. They are the focus for decision making, information flow, accountability, responsibility, and relationships with the external world beyond the nonprofit organization. Based on what you know about the organization (as described above) develop a plan on how you will respond to the above issues.
